The National Research Council of Canada's centre for optical astronomy, located near
Victoria, British Columbia. It is part of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. The
observatory is noted for the stellar and galactic studies done there, particularly work
on binary and multiple stars. It was founded by J. S. Plaskett, and the 1.85-metre
(72-inch) telescope began operating in 1918. A 1.2-metre (48-inch) telescope was added
in 1962 and the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre established there in 1988.
